Ravens Never Lie I remember he used to photograph me.
Sinewy arms bare, long stringy hair restrained by a thick purple rubber band from leftover asparagus, and yellow teeth leering. He would call me Baby, but he was no Patrick Swayze, and this was no Dirty Dancing. It was more than that. So much more.
"Beautiful! Over here, baby, over here!" he'd cry, his heavy black camera perched like an over-fed glossy raven on his shoulder. It would click manically at me, flashing again and again and again. Each pose, every photograph - lips pursed, legs crossed, hands on hips, on and on and on - were strewn around that tiny bare room, on the cool hardwood floor.

with a nod and a “hello”. ideals
were never enough for mr smith, the meager
man living in number four, stoic.
i never saw him leaning on anyone but himself. striving
to hear the music, his ears were striving.
is he lonely? do his eyes avert
the hand holding, claiming to be stoic?
he battles the aches and pains, a contender
worthy of of more than the meager
sums that have been lobed his way. an ideal
afternoon is spent chatting about the ideals
he once pursued. he feels like he has been striving
his whole life, graciously accepting the meager
rewards, because beggars can not advert
their goals. much advice is exchanged from one contender
to the next; “How to Become Stoic:
You can't let the world know just how stoic
you can be”, he tells me. “Their ideals
will never be high enough for a pure contender
